In a profoundly emotional moment captured in the South Korean documentary Meeting You, a grieving mother, Jang Ji-sung, was given the opportunity to reunite with her deceased seven-year-old daughter, Na-yeon, through virtual reality. Na-yeon had tragically passed away from a blood-related disease three years prior. Utilizing VR technology, developers created a digital avatar of Na-yeon, modeled on a child actor and based on photos and memories provided by her mother. The reunion took place in a virtual recreation of a park where Na-yeon used to play, and as the avatar approached, calling out, “Mom, where have you been? Have you been thinking of me?”, Jang was overcome with emotion. Despite being unable to physically touch her daughter, Jang expressed her longing and love, saying, “I really want to touch you just once. I really missed you.” The experience, though heart-wrenching, provided Jang with a sense of closure and comfort, allowing her to say goodbye and cherish a final moment with her daughter.
